We're up at the crack of dawn doing any last minute packing before we head to port. Because we didn't get our transfer when we arrived in Santorini, the offered to give us a transfer to the port instead. (Even though I think we never paid for the transfer in the first place). We hop into the van and went slowly down the steepest and scariest road down to the port. (See below)
You see those zigzags down the side of the cliff? Yep, thats the road...We arrive more than 2 hours before our ferry is due to depart, and the ferry usually doesn't arrive until about 30mins before departure (11am departure). We sit down at a cafe and paid $20 for coffee and toast between the two of us. This is when I proceed to explain to Moishii how the hell I got locked in a toilet cubicle the night before. He's still baffled as to HOW I even managed to climb into that wall because it was so high up! Reliving the moment was just too stressing for me. I leave him at the cafe whilst I ran to the nearest shop to buy more postcards and a nice big poster of the sunset I missed....
We move our luggage into the departure lounge to wait for our ferry. Theres no aircon, no ventilation, and about 150 people crammed into a small room. Come 10:30am, there is still no ferry. 11am, no ferry. 11:15, no ferry. More people cram into the departure lounge. 11:30am, no ferry. 11:45am, no ferry. I decide to head to the toilet, this time being smart and bringing my mobile. I'm in the toilet when my mobile rings. Its Moishii. He starts screaming that the ferry is here and people are stampeding towards the door. Barely gathering my stuff, I dash out of the toilet, jump over people's luggages, almost tripped over a dog and ran up to Moishii and grabbed my suitcase and started heading towards the gate. People are pushing and shoving, the heat is getting worse and they haven't opened the gate yet. After 10 more minutes of pushing and shoving, the door open and people start running towards the ferry. Being the one that always gets to the front of the queue, I dragged my suitcase and went full speed ahead towards the ferry. This is when we get redirected to another queue because of our huge suitcases. I quickly drag my 30kg suitcase up the ramp and dump our suitcase on the deck (All luggage racks were full).
We walk to our seats which is at the very front of the ferry. This is when I said that I hope we have indoor seats since I don't want to get any more sunburnt. Moishii commented that there are no outdoor seats by the look of it. We walk to our seats which is indoors at the very front of the ferry. He takes the window seat so he can work on his tan with what little sun light was coming in. Knowing that its going to be a 3hr+ ride (6hrs+ by ferry, 3hrs+ for the "fly cat" that we were catching), we decided to take 1 motion sickness tablet each.....but then it IS a ferry ride and it could get a bit rough. So we took 1.5 each instead of taking 2 since we didn't think it was necessary and would knock us out. 10mins into the ferry ride, the speed picks up and suddenly the window gets continously hit by the water spray. "Now we know why theres no outdoor seats, people will get soaked!" I commented. First 2 hours of the ride was pretty incident free except for the one time where the ferry hit a big wave, but pretty much smooth sailing from island to island. I went out and checked during one of our stops to find our suitcases under the biggest pile of luggage ever! We should be safe. Feeling better knowing our luggage is still there, we sit back, relax and try to nap. We pull into some island to drop off more people and more passengers board. Next stop, Mykonos!!!
10mins into the last leg of the trip, the speed picks up even more. Throughout the trip we had both been commenting on how glad we were to get the flying cat which will cut the travelling time by half as opposed to the big slow ferry. The motion tablets kick in again and we both fall sleep. Suddenly, I lifted up out of my seat before both me and the ferry came crashing back down. Jolted out of my sleep, I look out the window just in time to see the whole window getting hit by a huge wave. We hit another wave when the ferry lifts out of the water before crashing back into the sea. Again. And again. And again. I'm terrified for my life and grip onto the arm rest of my seat with both arms. I press my head into the arm rest because I was too terrified to look. The american guy sitting across the aisle from me said "These fast ferries are the shittiest thing in the world!! The ride is always so rough!! I would catch the slow ferry if they had one!!". Too scared to respond, I keep my head down and wait for the ride to end. The ferry continues to hit wave after wave after wave. It felt like I was a chicken in a shake and bake bag. Except the person only wanted to shake and not bake! Every time the ferry hits a wave, I left out a little yelp. The guy next to me kept saying "Its ok, we're almost there. Its going to be over soon. Everything will be ok! We'll be fine!". Feel reassured, I look up only to see the window get hit by more water when we hit one of the biggest waves yet. The next few seconds was a bit confusing. One moment I thought I was on the ferry ride from hell, the next I thought I was sitting at the Sydney Opera House listening to the Symphony Orchestra of Vomit. It was like "bleh, bleh, bleH, Bleh BLEHHHHHHHHHH, Bleh bleh, Bleh bleh...."
I look around and everyone is donating their breakfast into the sick bags. This poor woman was too sick to even grab the paper bag. She reached into the bag on her lap, pulled a plastic bag out, and instead of leaning over to throw up (With all the rocking, it was impossible to lean forward unless you are gripping onto the seat infront of you.) she lifts the bag up to her tilted back head, and just went for it. After about 5-10mins of this, they finally managed to slow the ferry down until it was almost at a standstill. The only problem was that they stopped the ferry in one of the choppiest part of the water. The ferry was tilting from left to right so bad that when I looked out the HUGE 1.5m high windows, all I saw was water. No sky, no land. We were tilting THAT BAD. Mind you, we were sitting very high up as well. Atleast 2-3m above sea level. We start panicking thinking our luggage has been lost during one of the rough hits, or that its soaked. Remember, our bags werent sitting in the luggage compartment. The ferry starts moving again, I'm turn to Moishii and asked if he wants to film this, he screams "ARE YOU OUTTA YOUR MIND!! I WANT TO LIVE!!". The ferry starts picking up speed when we hit more waves. The whole rollercoaster starts agains. I again, duck down and grab onto my seat whilst screaming "GET ME OFF THIS FERRY!!!". I managed to peek out through the corner of my eye and saw land. I start screaming "OMG I SEE LAND!!! WE'RE ALMOST THERE!! ITS MYKONOS!!". This is when another guy screams that its just another island. We hit another wave followed by more screaming and vomitting. The american guy jumps out of his seat and bolts to the back of the ferry. Thinking that he's had enough and was going to yell at some crew members, I close my eyes and grip on to anything thats bolted to the ground. Finally the ferry slows down and we start pulling towards land. I recognise the port! The shops! The statue near the waterfront! ITS MYKONOS!!! The ferry rocks it way over to the port to dock. I'm practically in tears from relief. My hands are cold and clammy, my whole body is shaking from fear. I quickly gather my things which were thrown all over the floor and try not to throw up when nausea tried to take over when I bent down. This is when the American guy came back, pale and green and sweating. Moishii, who had to visit the toilet once the ferry came to a standstill, saw the guy in the toilet hurling his guts out.
We stumble to the back of the ferry and find out suitcases where we proceeded to drag it off the ramp. The minute I was off the ramp, I dumped the suitcase on the ground and ran towards the nearest wall to hug it. Moishii throws his suitcase down and we have a group hug with lots of tears. This is when I look up and see the what was written on the side of the ferry. Without even hestitating, we both pulled out our cameras to take a photo of it.......

Wanting to get as far away as possible from the ferry, we grab our bags and push our way through the crowd. Expecting the worse, we were surprised to find our transfer guy waiting for us. He sees the both of us and insisted that the was only told to pick up one person. We insisted that we booked for 2 people and it was a twin room etc etc (We did only book for one. I pointed this out to Moishii about a month before he holiday and he insists that its only an error on the invoice). We hop into the van and we're on our way. We pull up to this alleyway where the guy takes us to our apartment. We ended up getting a room on the second floor, where the stairs was so narrow, we couldnt drag our suitcases up because the wheels will fall of the edge. Why? There was no railings on the stairs...The guy opens the door to our "Serviced apartment" which was to contain a fridge and kitchenette, and all we saw was 2 beds , a table, chair and a mini bar fridge. No TV, no aircon, no kitchenette, and no where to put our luggage. Moishii tips the guy whilst I try to find somewhere to fit my suitcase. We crash into bed and start laughing and crying from disbelief as to what happened today. Moishii, trying to make me feel better, said that atleast we only had to pay for one transfer instead of 2. I asked him how much did he tip the guy. He answers 6 euros. FFS, we paid 7euros for one transfer, we practically paid for the other one!!! More laughing and crying. Thinking it was the shock from today, we grabbed our bags and decided to head to the 24hr cafe to see if we can bump into any locals. In particular, Johnny boy.
We rock up only to find that the 24hr cafe has been closed down! We quickly dash to the exchange place only to find that the exchange woman is missing. We hear a noise from one of the side rooms. It sounded something inbetween someone throwing up, coughing, sneezing and suffering from diahorrea and constipation at the same time! Wanting to make a get away, but realising that I need to exchange money to survive, we wait. This big bloke, 2-3times my size stumbles out of the toilet, coughing and wheezing, face red as a tomato and sweating like he just ran a marathon almost ran into me. I kept my eyes down, handed over the money, exchanged and ran outta there without breathing. Feeling disappointed, we thought we better eat something since we didn't know if we were starving, or still feeling nauseous.
Now since the last trip, I've done alot of research on where we should go at Mykonos, one of which, was Alexis, which is supposed to have the best souvalaki. We walk in and order 2 chicken Souvlaki plates. The guy hands us one pitta roll. We said we ordered a plate, but we'll take the roll anyway, but we ordered 2, so he makes another. We hold the pitta in our hand and noticed that it was a CHICKEN pitta ROLL...a opposed to the chicken souvlaki we ordered. The guy told us the souvlaki only comes in pork. So we walk into a shop asking for a chicken souvlaki plate, and come out with a chicken pitta roll. WTF? Feeling jipped, but too tired to argue, we scoff and run. We wander through the familiar streets, pointing out shops we've been to, people we've met, places where we had incidents last time. The whole time heading towards the $40 woman's store making pit stops at the constipated woman who was happy, the crazy hat woman who was missing her hat and the woman who does it for fun. You know...during the last year, we've always talked about the $40 woman. For some reason she became the highlight of our last trip. We were worried when we booked the trip, that this would be an anticlimax. That we're not going to get to see Johnny boy, the exchange woman, the constipated woman, the crazy hat woman and of course, the $40 woman. What if she's retired? What if she's moved? Putting those thoughts aside, we stormed towards her shop. As we round the corner, our hearts start thumping, we're all jittery from nervourness.
Camera in hand, we push through the crowd, ready to storm into the shop. One glance and our heart sank. The shop was closed. When run up and press our face up against the dirty windows, hoping that she was having a siesta…in the shop…..during peak shopping hour…in full view on the bench……we were severly disappointed. Our greatest fear had come true, the $40 woman was missing!!! Thinking she was only feeling sick or was on a break, we decided to walk around and come back a bit later. Considering our fiasco with the whole pitta thing, we decided to go get crepes since we couldn’t tell if we were still sick or still hungry. After paying close to $20 for crepes and feeling totally unsatisfied by our two half meals, we decided to wander around the town to see whats happening. We stopped by a photo store to try and burn my digital photos onto CD. They tried to charge me 7 euros ($15AUD) to burn it onto a CD. I stormed outta the shop and into the nearest internet cafe and ended up paying 4euros for it!
We head back to the apartment to have a nap and prepare for the big night ahead. As I mentioned earlier, the room has no aircon, only a fan. Thinking we would suffocate, we left the windows open as we napped. For the next 3 hours, I think every tom dick and harry decided to ride their motorbike right past our open window and there must've been a big party going on for all the dogs on the whole island.....right under our window!! Giving up on trying to nap, we get changed and go out for dinner. With all the talk about Marco Polo last time, we decided that must be the first place that we go to. We walk towards Marco Polo when this weird ass guy tries to stop me. Avoiding all eye contact, I storm right past time and towards the tables at Marco Polo looking for a waiter to seat us. This is when Moishii pointed out that the guy I ignored WAS the waiter.....I mean.....can you blame me!?
We sit down and order our meal. Remembering that gorgeous grilled squid I had at Santoniri, thats what I ordered again. Moishii stuck to his usual Moussaka. Thinking we should celebrate that we made it back to Mykonos alive without drowning ourselves, a big jug of wine was also ordered. When the food came, I was confused as to whether the food was for me, or for Petros...the pelican. Instead of squid, it looked like bird feed, with bits of some type of animal chopped up into little pieces.....We tried to piece together what was my dinner, and it didn't resemble a squid into any shape or form. We decided to hit the red wine in order to forget the day that we'd had. Now I'm not sure whether it was the wine, or other people would find this weird. This woman, sat at Marco Polos, at 9pm at night, with her sunnies on the whole meal. Did she expect to get sunburnt or something?! We bumped into her after we left the restaurant, and to go with her sunnies at night time, she was wearing a huge ass cowboy hat!! WTF!? It was time for more alcohol.
We head back to the apartment to pull out our supplies of Vodka and lemonade. I mixed up a nice bottle of vanilla vodka and lemonade and we were on our way. Since it was too early to go clubbing, we decided to explore more of Mykonos to see if anything else has changed (And so we can check the $40 woman's shop again). So here we were, leisurely strolling through the streets of Mykonos when I thought I should get cracking on my bottle of cocktail. I twist the bottle cap ever so slightly, when you hear an almighty BANG! The top of my bottle exploded like it was a champagne cork, ricocheted off my hand and landed a few meters infront of me. The whole crowd turned to look at where that noise was coming from. I casually stroll over, pick up my lid, and made a run for it. Moishii is pissin himself laughing at me saying that I cause a scene everywhere I go. Before he could stop talking, the lid exploded off his bottle and almost took out an eye! Who knew that vodka and lemonade can cause that much gas......I ended up with a massive red spot on my hand as well!
We roamed around the far side of town since we were still quite early for clubbing (It was 11pm) when we stumbled upon Pierros. My first reaction was "OMG!! SO MANY HOT GUYS!!! OMG!!! HE'S TOPLESS!! OMG!! I LOVE THE NECKLACE HE'S WEARING!!!"
........Yes.....I loved the necklace he was wearing, and the bracelet, and those earrings would look gorgeous on me with the right outfit...there is something SERIOUSLY wrong with this situation. This is when I turn to my right, and see what everyone was cheering at. Two Drag queens wearing the most gorgeous jewellery that I will kill for!! HOW WRONG IS THIS!? This is when it kicked it. We stumbled upon the biggest gay bar on the whole of Mykonos. And I mean it was hugeeeeeee! It was a hegu 2 storey building that was packed to the brim with people. So full infact, that the crowd spilled onto the streets in a 30m radius! We could barely squeeze through the crowd cos there was so many hot bodied guys! I could cry....
We get through the crowd of hot gay men and sit on a flight of stairs to recap what just happened and to scull some more of our homemade cocktail. When we get up to leave, I could barely stand! Not cos of the alcohol, but because I sat on something really sticky like dried up softdrink. with no choice, we head back to the apartment so I could change. I dump my jeans into the shower so I can wash it first thing in the morning when I shower. I come out of the bathroom and Moishii spots the jeans in the shower. He PISSES himself laughing until he has an asthma attack. All because I threw my jeans into the shower. WTF? The alcohol has definately kicked him for him.
We gather our things and head towards the Scandanavian bar, stopping for a few B-52s for old times sake. We line up to get in (Yes theres a line this time!!) when we realise that we must prepurchase our drinks prior to entry. So cocktails it is! Handing over the money, we walk in with our voucher to be greated with more than 20 people on the dance floor! OMG!! We dump our things and head towards the bar to claim our very long island teas (Did I mention that they are VERY generous with their alcohol? And this is wayyyyyyy generous even for a long island tea). We jump onto the dance floor as they pump up the music. Beyonce's Crazy in Love is blaring out of the speakers. So here we were dancing away when the straw guy comes up to me. I'm not sure if he's trying to be seductive or not......but dancing with a straw in your mouth and almost taking out my eye with it is definately NOT a turn on for me. He starts telling me that I'm Craaaaaaaaaaaaaaazyyyyy like Beyonce! -_-" I turn my back and move to the other side of the dance floor. 5 mins later, this tall guy starts dancing with me. He leans forward and yells in my ear "DO YOU HAVE ANY COCAINE!?". WTF? Does it LOOK like I've got cocaine shoved down my top for selling!? Would you like to sample it whilst you're here you asshole!? I quickly ignore him and move to the other side of the dancefloor again (ALthough its getting harder because the dancefloor is getting packed). The cocaine guy then tries to score a fix with Moishii only to fail.
We scull the rest of our long island tea just as the music heats up. Guy #3 appears out of nowhere right infront of me. He's actually not bad looking. Actually, he looks familiar. I couldn't put a name to his face until he starts dancing and lets out a little "whoo!". Oh...my......freakin......GOD!! Its Johnny! I turn to Moishii who is standing on the sidelines trying to make eye contact. After alot of winking and head turning, he finally understands that the guy picking me up, is Johnny!! In disbelief, I go along with the whole pick up thing to see if he recognises me or not when things errrrrr......get.....not so comfortable. I signal for help from Moishii, and AGAIN he ignores me! So I did the only thing I knew how to do. I made a get away. I ducked into the crowd and made my way to the other side pretending to need the toilet, whilst secretly hoping that Moishii would be smart enough to come save me. Here I am standing outside the toilet door, bopping to the music when someone comes up behind me. Tony the Italian guy who is VERY affectionate and was definately happy to see me.......... Oh, according to him, I also "dance beautifully". Is that like the house pickup line that everyone uses!?
Someone comes out from the toilet, I escape from the Italian lover and hide inside the cubicle. After a few deep breaths (Not too deep.....its not the cleanest toilet ever), I dash out of the toilet, almost knocking the Italian guy over who was still waiting for me and dive towards the lounges where we kept our jackets. Moishii is almost passed out on the couch when I grabbed him and screamed in his ear that we need to get out of there. We grab our jackets and started to make our way through the crowd when Moishii yells "Hurry! He's coming!". Not knowing what he's on about, I step on it and practically shoved all the people down the stairs so I could make a get away. I get to the bottom of the stairs when I turn around and sees Johnny following us. We run through the crowd and hide around the corner. Next thing you know, Johnny was standing next to us asking us where we were going. Instead of saving me, some ASSHOLE that I call Moishii someone spat these words out. "Coffee, cafe, come?". You got it folks, he just invited Johnny to go have coffee with us! WTF? As if I haven't had enough for the night. So he leads the two us of down a few alley ways and end up by the waterfront. We sit down at a cafe where Moishii made me sit next to Johnny. He's going to pay for this. The next 30mins was the most awkward moment of my life. He barely speaks english, we don't speak greek. We all know why he's there and it doesn't make the situation any better. Somehow we managed to get out of him that he's from Albania and he comes to Mykonos to work every year during the peak season. We also found out that there is only 3 clubs worth going to on the island. 1st, you guessed it, Scanadanavian bar. The 2nd was Space Bar which we got some fliers to, but we thought we had to go back to the Scandanavian bar on our first night back at Mykonos, and the 3rd place was Pierros. Yes. The gay bar. Meanwhile, because I had to suffer through this whole experience whilst Moishii was trying to stop himself from laughing, I thought he needs to suffer with me. Like clockwork, I proceeded to kick him in the shins every 2 minutes with full strength. Not so funny now is it?
Our coffees come and I scull my drink as fast as I could almost burning the inside of me, but it was worth it so we could get out of there. We stand up to leave and again, Johnny decides to follow us. He wanted to know where we were going, and I said "Sleep" and did the head of hands sleeping action. He nods and follows us.....like what the? He leads us back to town past Pierros since we kept asking him about it trying to make sure we were talking about the same place. We stop outside and the gay guys really know how to party. He kept trying to shove Moishii into the club, asking him if he wanted to go in etc etc. Moishii panics and starts running away. The whole time we were walking back to our apartment, I kept trying to explain to him that we're going home to sleep, yet he kept following us. O_o We were getting close to the apartment, and there was no way I was letting him know where I was staying. So I stopped, turn to him and said "Sleep, bye bye!" And before he could say a word, I turned and literally ran down the street. Moishii follows and we hide around the corner trying not to make a sound incase he tried to follow us. A few seconds pass when we realise that we're safe. When quickly run back into the apartment, collapse into bed whilst I scream abuse at Moishii as well as laugh my head off! This is when we realised WHY Johnny kept trying to follow us.....when we said "sleep", he thought we meant "Lets sleep together!" @$%^@@$&^#&%^&@#%@#% We quickly grabbed our video camera and phone card and run down to the phone booth on the corner to make some random abusive phone calls before we flopped into bed at 3am trying to sleep after all the coffee we had 30mins earlier
