So what does that mean?

My manager pulled me aside yesterday to have a chat to me. Basically a week or so ago, I had a chat to her about what opportunities are available to me. I basically told her that I want to be a Manager and that my goal is to climb the corporate ladder (OK, I didn't use those exact words...). Anyway, the purpose of our chat is that she is offering me a chance to learn off a contract Test Manager and another one of my colleagues to eventually work towards the Test Manager position. I don't know exactly what that means, but it sounds like an opportunity for me to learn more things and take on more responsibility to eventually fulfill my goal.

We had a team meeting today where she announced this decision to my immediate team. She then sent an email out to all the other Managers informing them of this. This email then got circulated around the rest of the office. Suddenly I'm getting a whole heap of emails saying "Congratulations". Now this completely caught me off guard. I saw this as an opportunity to learn more and tune my management skills. But judging by the reactions, this is seen as a promotion? As far as I know, my job title hasn't changed, my corporate level hasn't changed (I'm still an executive) and there is definitely no extra money. However, there is going to be more responsibility and more work. So what does that mean? Is it a promotion? I don't know whether to celebrate or not. And I definitely haven't discussed this with my family as I don't see the point because its not a promotion. Or is it???

Do you sorta feel as though you just got your degree again? You know, that sense of "oh...okay...is that it?" Actually, I remember the day you graduated, I was helping you safety pin the cape on you at the Holme Building toilets! *LoL* And it was a rainy day.

Yes, its a promotion. You got the congratulations from your workmates and they acknowledge that you are the lead person to go to from now on. You should also be getting the friendly yet snide remarks about everyone loading your shoulders with outrageous requests from your customers...because, you know, you are the lead now!

Lils, we'll celebrate this weekend!

CONGRATULATIONS FOR THE RECOGNITION AND PROMOTION!!!

petals. I dont think so.. It's not really a promotion until you get the formal letter advising you of the case. As said, she's still what she was before the announcement and nothing else has been said or done. Shes just tagging along for the ride ;)

Lils, It means you're just going to be doing more work and getting paid less for it. Then again, that is one way of getting to that point you're aiming for :)

Be a good sponge and your perseverance will pay off.

Good Luck!

hehehe now I'm just as confused. Especially when I think about it, OFFICIAL promotions won't be announced until about March? I'm currently in the process of doing my yearly appraisal, so I guess at the end of that, if I get an official promotion, then i'll celebrate. In the meantime, I'm going to treat it business as usual, but with just alot more work. Actually, thats nothing new :P
